Friday in San Francisco: Rally to stand with immigrants

Friday at noon: Join our rally to stand with Bay Area immigrants

Friend —

Last week, I traveled across the country to Washington, DC to join Bend the Arc’s historic Jewish civil disobedience for the Dream Act because every day that passes without permanent protections for immigrant communities is a moral crisis.

This Friday, our Jewish community in the Bay Area will rally in the streets: Because when our immigrant neighbors are under attack, we show up.

Will you join me in front of the San Francisco Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices this Friday to show solidarity with our immigrant neighbors?

Immigrant communities are under attack — and as a Jew, and the daughter of an immigrant, I feel the urgency of this moment in my bones.

Just yesterday, the Senate voted again to fund the government without a solution to protect Dreamers. Here in the Bay Area, there are rumors of a large-scale immigration raid to punish immigrant communities and California as a whole for its progressive policies.

The effects of a climate of fear and isolation on immigrant communities are devastating: immigrants are reporting missing school, work, and medical appointments.

A country where my neighbors are unable to participate fully and safely in public life is unacceptable — and it’s personal to me. My mom is a Jewish immigrant from Mexico. When she became a citizen, it changed our lives: she had access to healthcare, better job opportunities, and dignity.

I know what it’s like to feel the weight of isolation lifted from my family — and I fight in solidarity with the Dreamers, and with all undocumented folks, because they are my family too.

As I occupied the floor of the Russell Senate Building last week, I felt my stake in this fight — and the power we have when our communities fight together  — as I heard the words of our song echoing in the Rotunda: we will build this world with love.

Our next public act of love and solidarity with our immigrant neighbors is this Friday at noon in front of the San Francisco ICE office — I hope you’ll be there to join me.

In solidarity,

Nicoll, Bend the Arc: Bay Area Leader
